Countries with the Highest and Lowest IQ (Intelligence Quotient) – IQ Map
Countries with the lowest and highest intelligence quotient (IQ) often spark curiosity, as they reflect both education systems and wider social factors. The distribution of IQ across the globe has been mapped and compared in several studies. Although results may differ, they provide a broad overview of cognitive performance among nations.

What is IQ?
Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a numerical indicator designed to evaluate general cognitive ability. Standardized tests typically assess reasoning, verbal comprehension, working memory, and problem-solving. Scores are normed so that the population average is set at 100 with a standard deviation of 15. Higher or lower values indicate above- or below-average performance relative to the reference group. Despite limitations, IQ remains widely used in psychology, education, and cross-national comparisons.
Method and Type of Study
The country estimates referenced here follow the approach reported in Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen’s book IQ and Global Inequality (2006). They compiled IQ test results from published studies and national samples where available. When data were scarce, they imputed values using regional neighbors and developmental indicators, producing a complete global panel. The method blends direct test results with extrapolations to create comparable country scores. While the dataset is frequently cited, many scholars recommend treating cross-country IQ rankings cautiously rather than as definitive measurements.

IQ Across Continents
The distribution of IQ shows clear regional differences, shaped by history, culture, and development. Some continents have countries clustered near the global average, while others show a wider range. These variations highlight the importance of both local conditions and global comparisons.
Europe IQ Map
European countries generally rank in the upper and middle ranges of global IQ estimates. Nations like Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland show averages above 100. Eastern Europe, including Poland and Estonia, records values near the global mean of around 99. Southern countries such as Portugal and Greece fall slightly lower but remain close to the average.

Western Asia and Russia IQ Map
Western Asia and Russia show a wide diversity of results. Countries such as Israel and Armenia score in the low 90s, while Turkey and Iran appear in the high 80s to around 80. The Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE record values near 81. Russia itself is estimated at around 97, close to the European average. This region highlights contrasts between developed and developing economies.

Eastern and Southeastern Asia IQ Map
Eastern Asia contains the highest averages in the world. Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore consistently top the list with scores above 103. China is also strong, averaging around 100. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia, shows more moderate results between 87 and 90. This cluster of high performers and mid-range countries underlines the diversity of Asia’s educational outcomes.
North and Central America IQ Map
In North America, the United States and Canada average close to the high-90s. Mexico ranks lower with an estimate around the low-80s. Central American countries like Honduras and El Salvador also appear in lower ranges. This reveals a divide between the northern and southern parts of the region.
South America IQ Map
South America largely falls within the mid-to-lower IQ groups. Argentina and Uruguay are among the highest in the region, averaging in the mid-90s. Brazil and Colombia trend lower, estimated in the low 80s. Bolivia and Paraguay rank further down the distribution.
Africa IQ Map
African nations appear most frequently in the lowest categories of the IQ tables. Many Sub-Saharan countries record estimates between roughly 60 and 75. Nations such as Sierra Leone, Niger, and Somalia sit at the very bottom of the rankings. North African states, including Morocco and Tunisia, reach somewhat higher values near the high-70s.
Australasia IQ Map
Australia and New Zealand score near the developed-world average, around the high-90s to 100. Pacific islands such as Fiji record lower estimates near the mid-80s. This contrast reflects differences in resources, education systems, and economic conditions. Overall, the region contains both high performers and weaker averages.

IQ scores across nations provide a broad snapshot of cognitive performance, but they should be interpreted with care. The highest averages cluster in East Asia, while lower averages are more common in parts of Africa. Europe and North America mostly sit around or slightly above the global mean. These figures are informative for comparison, yet they capture only one dimension of human capability.
